Tag Archives: White Tea

I always hesitate when I see any food on a menu marked with quotation marks because that’s sketchy, let’s be honest.

What do you mean “chicken?”

But I finally get it now.

After trying this restaurant that I have passed for almost 2 years now, I know that “Chicken” is imitation chicken made for vegetarians.

Yes, my blog title has the word STEAK in it, but I do actually have some vegetarian tendencies.  Like eating salad.

Franchia is a vegetarian restaurant and tea house around the corner from my apartment.  It serves “Zen Cuisine” and although I was hesitant about what was so Zen about it, as soon as you walk in, you get it.  Dimly lit with soft melodic music, you immediately feel zen.  Advertised as a tea house, I had to try one of their hot teas so I got the White Peony and I loved how they served it!  Loose tea leaves always make the tea experience more fun!

(Terrible picture courtesy of my blackberry!)

The loose leaves are steeping in the ceramic strainer that fits right over the cup!  How fancy and fun right?

My sister and I went and decided to try one of every course so for an appetizer, we split Spicy Kimchi Pancakes.  You will never meet two Jews who love Kimchi more than we do.  For those of you who do not know, Kimchi is a traditional Korean dish made of spicy fermented cabbage.

It’s amazing. And the Kimchi pancakes were everything we imagined they would be.

For our main dish we ordered the vegetarian curry hot pot which was pretty killer.  I’m not one to order curry very often because my mom told me one too many horror stories of her time living near an indian restaurant, but this dish changed my mind, and you know what else did?

The “Chicken!”

It was delicious!  I don’t know how to describe its taste or texture other than it was really good!  It felt like I was eating meat. I was fooled!  Chicken is definitely lowest on the ladder of meats that I enjoy (next to turkey), but I think “Chicken” might surpass it.  I was diggin’ around this hot pot in search of any last remnant of  this “chicken” that I could stab with my chopstick.

For dessert we had an Ice Green Tea Float which was essentially an Iced Green Tea with Vanilla Almond Soy Ice Cream in it.

The ice cream was pretty tasty, but the green tea part was a little boring and green for my liking.  We only ordered it because they were out of Blueberry Coconut Cake (those bastards!).

Overall, it was a pretty exotic place to eat and their menu was very interesting.  Even if you are not vegetarian, I highly recommend checking out the “Chicken” and maybe even the “Duck” or the “Lobster.”

Just one of those all time perfect days…

Have any of you ever had one of those days that you didn’t plan out, yet it turned out to be exactly what you wanted to do?  Well yesterday I had one of those days and there were numerous points in the day where I just stopped and thought “this is exactly what I want to be doing right now.”  Here’s how it went down:

I arose after a slumber of about 11 hours, showered which I usually hate but liked for some reason yesterday and made my way to brunch with my closest girl friends.  We went to Resto to celebrate my sister’s and my birthday a day early.  (Today is actually my birthday! Yippee!)  You’ve got to check out the menu for this place because it is insane.  If you are a fan of animal parts like pork belly and blood sausage, you MUST go.  If you’re not, they still have tons of delicious things you can eat but the food is Belgian so everything is really unique.  I had a glorified grilled cheese with fancy cheese and awesome bacon which was out of control.  They also have glorious french fries with a homemade mayonnaise – the only correct way to eat a fry.  The decor is the restaurant is incredibly charming and if you are a party of 6-8, you should request the table right at the front window.  With the windows open and the sun shining and the breeze blowing in…it was just perfect!

After brunch we rolled our fat selves to Madison Square Park to stare at the cute dogs, bask in the sun and digest.  Although it was only in the mid 70’s, people were already almost naked in their skimpy bikinis trying to soak of every bit of sun they can to get that wonderful tan.  We laid there for a bit, chit chatted and all that and then headed over to the Limelight Marketplace.  What once was a church turned into nightclub, has now become a high end shopping center including boutiques selling, caviar, hunter rain boots, and Baci Gelato (WHICH ROCKED MY WORLD).  Peanut Butter and Chocolate Hazelnut.  Just do it.  It’s just so strange how my Mom used to tell me about her crazy nights out dancing at this famous club, and now I was perusing the gourmet cheese selection in the same place.

I even spotted a celebrity!

Can you guess who it is?

Oh, just Jimmy Fallon.  New love of my life. Unfortunately he was there shopping with his wife.

While at the Limelight, I got a Tarot Card reading that scared the living shit out of me.

It was so accurate to everything that was happening in my life that I didn’t even know what to do with myself.  She knew things only my immediate family knows. Personality traits that I like to think I hide well.  My future love life??  It was creepy and amazing at the same time.  She even told me that I need to detox my body to better focus on my life.  How did she know I was thinking the same thing the other day?!? Maybe a future life change coming up?  Keep a look out!

From the Limelight, we all headed to Chelsea Market where I was overwhelmed with how much I could have eaten, had I not gorged myself on grilled cheese and gelato earlier.  MAN!!!!  The whole place was filled with things I love.

Strange cupcakes I’d probably eat.  No lies.

And then I was so thirsty I could die, so I got an Iced white tea, called Blue Moon which was white tea with hints of blueberry and vanilla.  IT WAS SO GOOD MMMM MMMM!!!  At that moment I was like “this day is just so perfect!”

Then I headed home to sit on my roof and relax for a little.  No tan, but it was nice.  You know how it goes.

Ordered in dinner and watched the Miss USA pageant with friends. My sorority sister was competing so it was wonderful to see her looking so gorgeous on live TV!  I did not like the girl who won so I’m calling for a rematch!  She kept saying “Hi Mom.”  It bothered me.

It was just one of those really perfect days.  Didn’t do anything I didn’t want to do.  The weather was wonderful.  The company was just right.  It was just great. It would have been better if my friend won Miss USA, but fate says there’s a reason she didn’t, so how can I be mad? I think she’s meant for even better.
